Beginning his career under the pseudonym Edward Maxey, Mapplethorpe received early acclaim for his nudes, portraits and still lifes. His later, innovative work—bridging the gap between photography and abstract painting—subsequently has distinguished him as a truly unique talent.

Mapplethorpe has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the U.S. and internationally. His editorial work has been seen in Interview, Paper Magazine and Mirabella.

In addition to his other signature projects, Mapplethorpe specializes in photographing one-year-old babies, exploring the human spirit through their fresh and unguarded expressions.
