Major law firms contribute extraordinary support to inMotion’s pro bono program via externships. On three- to four-month rotation schedules, associates (i.e., externs) from firms work full-time in our offices, carrying caseloads comparable to those handled by family law staff attorneys at legal services organizations.
The benefits to inMotion and our clients are clear.
We gain immediate access to dedicated lawyers eager to provide in-court representation to women who contact us with emergency cases presenting significant and compelling challenges. These lawyers often appear in court for new clients with less than 24-hours’ notice.
The benefits to sponsoring law firms and their most talented associates are equally clear.
Firms nurture their most promising litigation associates while increasing their pro bono profiles in the legal and corporate community.
| The special features of the inMotion extern experiences include: |
- Our director, legal services, and experienced staff attorneys provide quality mentoring and supervision
|
- Externs average at least three appearances a week in Supreme and Family Courts throughout the City, where they interact with judges and opposing counsel early in their litigation careers
|
- Where possible, inMotion assigns cases to externs that offer the possibility of establishing new precedent in matrimonial or family law
|
- Because the sponsoring law firm is counsel of record on all cases handled by its externs, the firm experiences a substantial increase in its overall pro bono hours
