Our leverage model
InMotion works in partnership with law firms and corporations to leverage financial and volunteer resources to benefit women who cannot afford to pay for legal services. Our small staff of 11 legal professionals annually trains, mentors and supports volunteer attorneys who handle over 1,500 legal cases. An additional 1,500 women receive critical pro se services that allow them to proceed on their own in court.

A caring community of support
The collective impact of our partnerships with law firms and corporations is clear. Support from New York ’s legal and business community allows inMotion to offer an array of attractive programs, from traditional pro bono representation to innovative outreach initiatives.

The bottomline
Every year, thousands of women are gaining access to justice, developing new skills and building stronger futures for themselves and their children.

Pro bono representation

  • Matrimonial, family and immigration law—Lawyers at major law firms and corporations represent women referred to them by inMotion in cases involving divorce, orders of protection, issues of child custody, visitation and child or spousal support. Their volunteer attorneys also assist battered immigrant women and their children in petitioning to become legal residents of the United States. Learn more.

  • Training—Critical to our success are the comprehensive trainings that we provide. Attorneys with no prior experience in matrimonial, family and immigration law are able to represent inMotion clients with confidence. InMotion is an accredited provider of Continuing Legal Education in New York State , so attorneys are eligible for CLE credits for their participation in our trainings. In addition, inMotion’s volunteer attorneys can receive CLE pro bono credits for their representation of inMotion clients. Learn more.

  • Expert mentoring—Hands-on mentoring, including document review, is available at all times from inMotion’s expert legal staff and from volunteer practitioners with decades of experience handling matrimonial and family law cases. Knowing that experienced back-up is always just a phone call away has enhanced the success rates as well as the personal satisfaction enjoyed by our volunteers.

Corporate partnership
Corporate Partners of inMotion annually contribute financial support to inMotion . Each firm and corporation selects one of its partners or executives as its representative to inMotion. Learn more.

Litigation externships and fellowships
Major law firms contribute extraordinary support to inMotion ’s pro bono program through externships and fellowships. On three- to four- month rotation schedules, associates from firms work full-time in our offices, allowing inMotion to provide in-court representation on difficult, often emergency, cases that could not otherwise be placed with a volunteer attorney. In-kind support
Last year, our volunteers donated 61,000 hours of free legal and other professional services to inMotion and our clients, valued at over $15 million; the vast majority of this time is accounted for by volunteers from law firms and corporations.

In addition, most of inMotion’s CLE trainings are hosted by law firms and corporations. They welcome our legal staff to their large conference rooms and freely provide refreshments and non-legal staff, computer and other technological support. These institutions also donate available office furniture, computers and equipment to inMotion. Learn more.

Community involvement
InMotion offers law firms and corporations the opportunity to sponsor our neighborhood walk-in clinics and community outreach programs. Immigrant women, especially vulnerable because they face language and cultural barriers, are often unaware of our services and of other possible resources they may call upon. Learn more.

Our staff, and volunteers familiar with the language and culture of a community, present legal and practical referral information to staff and clients of community-based organizations throughout New York City. In this way, we connect with women who might otherwise never reach out for needed assistance.
