Social services support
In addition to their legal challenges, inMotion’s clients frequently face difficult non-legal issues, such as finding safe and affordable housing or accessing important financial and health benefits. Many clients also need help coping with mental health issues. Often we find that a client’s inability to address these issues adversely affects the progress of her legal case.
Types of assistance we provide
- Crisis intervention, safety planning and assistance locating a domestic violence shelter
- Counseling services and referral to mental health services for her and/or her children
- Assistance and advocacy with public assistance, health insurance, housing and other entitlements
- Referrals to additional support services, such as job training and financial empowerment programs
Social work students
Our manager, social work, supervises graduate students and other student volunteers with social work field placements at inMotion.
InMotion is an approved field placement site for graduate students in social work at
- Columbia University School of Social Work
- Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service
- New York University School of Social Work
You can volunteer to work in our offices as part of the social work team. Both graduate and undergraduate students participate in projects that directly assist inMotion’s clients in achieving safe and healthy futures for themselves and their families.

Bilingual assistance
If you are fluent in a language other than English and familiar with one of the many immigrant communities in New York City, you can provide culturally sensitive assistance in their primary language to women who need supportive social work services. Spanish-fluency is particularly valuable, as more than 50% of our clients are Latina.
Your commitment
You and our manager, social work, will discuss and agree upon the general range of work you will undertake.
Often students volunteer one or more days a week for a semester or more. We encourage students to commit more significant blocks of time between semesters and during the summer months. A larger time commitment from you means the possibility of taking a leading role on a major project.

Social work professionals
Our manager, social work, assesses the mental health needs of the inMotion legal clients she sees. She and the students under her supervision, however, can assist only a limited number of women with crisis counseling. We make referrals to other agencies and professionals for any desired long-term counseling and therapy.
Volunteer counselors are needed to provide free counseling or therapy to an individual inMotion client who has no other means of getting this help.
Bilingual assistance
If you are fluent in a language other than English and familiar with one of the many immigrant communities in New York City , you can provide culturally sensitive assistance to women who cannot communicate their legal needs to us in English. Spanish fluency is particularly valuable, as more than 50% of our clients are Latina.
Your commitment
You and our manager, social work, will discuss and agree upon the parameters of your service undertaking.
We envision that you, as a licensed professional, will discuss and define your relationship with any woman referred to you by inMotion as you do each of your patients.
What you gain
You will have the satisfaction of contributing to the well-being of an individual in need of your expertise. You will assist her both in dealing with the immediate emotions raised by her legal case and in appreciating her own capacity to build a positive future.
