Position description
InMotion seeks part-time intake volunteers. This position requires a minimum commitment of 7 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks. The positions are unpaid; however students may apply work-study, public interest law fellowship or clinical credit through their schools to their internship. Intake takes place over the phone, in our Manhattan office, on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Position responsibilities
Intake volunteers work under the direction of inMotion’s Pro Bono Manager and Intake Specialists. Assignments include substantial opportunities to interact interact directly with clients. Intake volunteers conduct telephone intakes with new potential clients (an interview to determine her legal issues, such as divorce, child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, and orders of protection). Intake interviews involve gathering detailed information and documentation about the woman and her potential case. An inMotion staff member reviews each intake to assess the legal issues involved, whether the woman is eligible to receive legal services from inMotion, and what type of services could be provided to her. Volunteers assist inMotion staff with this case assessment.

Qualifications

Paralegal or college students/graduate

Good interpersonal and organizational skills, self-starter, and highly motivated

Excellent computer skills

Knowledge of family, matrimonial and/or immigration law or domestic violence helpful but not required

Ability to work collaboratively and independently

Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred
