Position description
InMotion has received a grant through the New York Bar Foundation for The Joan L. Ellenbogen Memorial Fellowship*.  InMotion seeks a current third-year law student or graduate of a New York State law school who is interested in matrimonial law.

Current students are expected to work 20 hours per week for ten weeks.  Graduates are expected to work 30 hours per week for ten weeks.  The hourly rate is $15 per hour and the Fellowship will take place from September 13 through November 19, 2010.

Position responsibilities
The Fellow will work under the direction of inMotion’s staff attorneys. The Fellow’s assignments will vary depending on her/his interests and inMotion’s program needs. However, the focus of the Fellow’s work will be on assisting attorneys with contested divorces and assisting clients with securing uncontested divorces. The Fellow may also assist with in-house trainings at large law firms, conduct initial client intakes by phone, research legal issues and assist with updating program materials and training manuals. The Fellow will learn basic interviewing skills through client interviews and learn substantive matrimonial law.

Qualifications  

Current third-year law student or graduate of a New York State law school

  • Good interpersonal and strong organizational skills, self-starter, and highly motivated
  • • Knowledge of family and/or matrimonial law or familiarity with domestic violence helpful but not required
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently 
  •  Bilingual English/Spanish a plus

*About Joan L. Ellenbogen

Ellenbogen Joan L. Ellenbogen was a graduate of New York University School of Law and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1965. From 1979 when the law firm of Ellenbogen & Goldstein, P.C., New York City, was founded with Marcia C. Goldstein, until her death in 2001, Ms. Ellenbogen practiced matrimonial and family law. In 1980, she was the Founding President of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, a state-wide organization dedicated to the advancement of women in society and in the legal profession. She was the first woman Chair of the Executive Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Ms. Ellenbogen was a member of the First Department Disciplinary Committee and served on the Board of Trustees of The Legal Aid Society. She was a member of the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section of the New York State Bar Association and in 2001 she was the recipient of the Association’s prestigious Ruth G. Schapiro Memorial Award.

Her many other professional activities included serving as President of the Alumni Association of New York University School of Law; being one of the organizers of the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert; serving as a member of the Joint Committee on Judicial Administration established by Governor Mario Cuomo and former Chief Judge Sol Wachtler; and serving as a Commissioner on the Commission on Judicial Nomination to the Court of Appeals. She was a fellow of the Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, New York Chapter, a Diplomate in the American College of Family Trial Lawyers, and a frequent lecturer to the bench and bar on matrimonial law. During her distinguished professional career, Ms. Ellenbogen received many awards and tributes. Ms. Ellenbogen lost her battle with pancreatic cancer on October 18, 2001 at the age of 59.
