The last protégée of Ansel Adams, Cook is renowned for her portraiture—character studies of people both in and out of the public eye. She has a special flair for capturing the personalities of politicians, artists, writers and entertainers, especially in their subtle interactions with spouses and parents.

Her luminous, revealing photographs are showcased in many national and international collections, including New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Washington D.C.’s National Portrait Gallery and London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. She has also published eight monographs of her work.

About her process, Cook explains: “I want the experience to be as personal as possible. I hope the subject will forget they are being photographed, forget I am there. It is fortunate and almost magical when the various psychological qualities of a person are integrated and made evident in a fraction of a second.”
