African Services Committee is a community-based organization dedicated to improving the health and self-sufficiency of the New York City African immigrant community. Services include free HIV testing, access to medical care, multilingual support groups, English classes, and a food pantry. Barrier Free Justice, run by the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, is designed to help disabled or deaf victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault navigate the criminal justice system. A network of social workers, case managers and attorneys provide guidance and support to facilitate disabled women’s steps toward safety. Services include case management, counseling, safety planning, assistance with housing and shelter, crime prevention, case updates and legal advocacy, skills training and crime victims board reimbursement.

Client services include crisis intervention, court evaluations and treatment and community outreach. Center for Anti-Violence Education teaches violence prevention, martial arts and self-defense classes to women, youth, children and LGBT individuals. Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or child abuse participating in the Survivors Prevention and Healing Project may attend a 5-week violence-prevention & self-defense course or a month of karate or tai chi for FREE. LifeNet is a citywide 24-hour mental health information and referral service. LifeNet’s staff of mental health professionals speak a variety of languages and can assist with family difficulties, drug or alcohol abuse and mental health issues such as depression, bipolar disorders, anxiety, phobia or panic disorders, anger, insomnia, eating disorders, schizophrenia and other psychoses.
